SPOTLIGHT: Diné Artist Jesse Yazzie

“Art was a vital lifeline that turned into a way of life.” – Jesse Yazzie
Meet Jesse Yazzie, an emerging Navajo artist who has new work in RooseveltRow!

Jesse’s recent piece is titled “Triumph Over Tragedy.” This piece shines a light into a window of his recent past in prison, broken relationships, people who helped along the way and how art and faith provided a path to help him overcome his struggles.

Jesse is one of four emerging artists selected to create new one-of-a-kind works through the UNCONTAINED mural project in collaboration with Xico Inc and Indigedesign Collab.

The UNCONTAINED mural project is designed to elevate emerging Latinx and Indigenous artists, and to provide a platform for the artists to create and showcase their stories. The seasonal, 3-month murals will illustrate stories depicting their identity, culture and heritage as an emerging artist.

The murals will debut along Roosevelt Street between 1st and 2nd Streets, on pop-up gallery shipping containers programmed by Xico, next to the Roosevelt Row Welcome Center.
